Thrifting in Austria

Daily writing prompt
What would you do if you lost all your possessions?

I am currently sitting in my favorite thrifted tiedye pants eating chili from a thrifted glass bowl thinking of my latest find, a pair of nice wooden chairs for my friend who had just moved to a new place.

This is my philosophy: Aside from some old letters, nothing I own is irreplaceable. If I woke up one day and realized all my earthly possessions were gone, I’d simply make a list of must-haves and head to my local thrift store.

There was a period in my teens where I would rather be anywhere than caught buying from the local bargain store, but luckily that phase of life is well behind me. Now, I have the habit of looking for second-hand shops in every new city I visit. I think of it as an archaeological experience. What someone previously had in their home but didn’t make the last attic clean out.

From glassware, clothing, furniture, media you wouldnt find anywhere else, thrift shopping can be quite nostalgic.

Currently, my favorites are the Trödelladen in downtown Linz, which benefits people experiencing homelessness and the close second VOIX. VOIX is more geared towards vintage-searching shoppers, with a mission of fighting fast fashion with timeless pieces and being conscious of diminishing world resources.

If you ever had to start over, or just wanted to refresh your space, consider making a beeline to your local thrift stores to rebuild or restyle! Your wallet and the environment will certainly thank you for it.
